A broad public?

A broad public?

Where does our broad public stand?

So I'm not totally paranoid after all – that's always comforting to know. Recently, we've at least seen something starting to resemble a debate over the mounting neo-moralism which I've seen taking hold over our once so liberal Swedish society. When the quite innocent Calvin Klein-image of our football star Fredrik Ljungberg and a female model was censured in Stockholm's central Stureplan square a few weeks ago, this was at least noted in our media. I've also read a couple of articles about our liquor license authorities who these days have taken it upon themselves to come down hard not anly on heavy drinking and drug abuse, but also on such things as excessive kissing (making out) in public, obscene dancing, explicit dressing and other filthy unseediness. In an article in the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper some time ago, a representative for the liquor license unit spoke out and said that the definition of ”good order” must be decided by ”where the broad public stands” – an expression which I've lately seen mentioned by several official officers. My question is: who is this ”broad public” and who is to decide where it ”stands”?
