New Design Cities

Claes Britton represents Stockholm in an international book about modern cities profiling themselves through design, to be published in Montreal in autumn 05.

In October 2004, Claes Britton was invited to present the case of Stockholm New magazine and the new international image of Stockholm at an international design seminar, namned New Design Cities in Montreal, Canada, hosted by the City of Montreal. Among the other invited speakers were representatives of the cities of Montreal, Lisbon, Glasgow, Paris, Lyon, Saint-Etienne and Antwerp, and New York City's Times Square Alliance – plus a number of independent speakers in the fields of architecture, design, city planning, and urban philosophy and theory, names such as John Thackara, Saskia Sassen and Francois Barré. The seminar presented a wide and unique overview of the rapidly mounting competition between cities, districts, and regions, as well as between other official and commercial players around the world aspiring to brand and market themselves through design and contemporary creativity.

In September/October, the speeches and experiences from this seminar will be featured in an ambitious book of the same name, New Design Cities, co-published by Canadian publishers Infopresse and the City of Montreal. In addition to the speeches, the book will also include surveys, statistics and interviews from each of the participants, along with other texts and a generous visual material.
