Swedish fashion fills a larger costume

There were few doubts that Stockholm's fashion week the week before last now once and for all entered the European stage, with some thirty shows around town, plus numerous smaller and largers fairs and exhibitions, releases, seminars and of course generous amounts of partying. International media interest was greater than ever, as was the general energy through the week. It's quite amazing how the Swedish fashion scene has exploded over the past few seasons. Enthusiasm and creativity are pumping. The week's central podioums at the magnificent Berns art noveax palace – generously provided by Swedish fashion's new benefactors, the Ekstranda investment company, owned by a copule of young H&M heirs, with my old friend PG Nilsson as a partner – has been a tremdous boost for the entire event.

The general levels of quality and professionalism of the shows have also been substantially elevated. There was plenty of show (neo-gothic Nakkna), excentricity and even originality, even if I personally still missed something of extravagance, glamour, sex, elegance, femininity and, above all, color. Trend and street are still the bread and butter of Swedish fashion and here we now have the right to claim ourselves as world leaders, no less – at least on the mens' side. Some thought that the mens' entrées at the Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair show were the climax of the week (others, however, were less impressed by this ambitiosly draped collection). Of what I myself had time to see, Blank made a convincing comeback with an extensive, slick, solid black, tightly cut collection, inspired by Russia and Helmut Lang. Best, however, was Back by Ann-Sofie Back. I haven't been a fan of the hyped London-based designer before, but this time I had no reservations. The collection was both cool, refined, personal and wearable. I'm sure that we have a major international star to be in Ann-Sofie, who also designs a more high fashion line, simply named Ann-Sofie Back. Unfortunately, neither of our two gifted young couturiers Sandra Backlund and Helena Hörstedt showed this time around either. It will be interesting to see how far Stockholm's Fashion Week can go, especially now that it will be moved in time, to avoid competition with London.

PS. Moreover, I fear that the decision has long been made and that USA will attack Iran in April or May at the latest. It's written in the signs. For the sake of our only planet, I hope that I'm wrong. DS.
