Johan's Darling is a killer

It was with great anxiety in my soul that went to see the grand premiere of my homeboy Johan Kling's celebrated, award winning first major motion picture "Darling" last nigh on a typically black gloomy February Sunday evening here in Stockholm at the Saga theater on Kungsgatan. Not that I for a second have doubted my friend's artistic capacity but still – matters such as this are sensititive. I knew full well that, had I not liked the film, I would have never gotten away with the usual bullshit – Johan would have seen through that from miles.

There was never any concern whatsoever for such worries. The film grabbed a tight grip immediately that just continued to tigthen into near strangulation in the merciless, pitch black end (any other finale would have surprised me with Johan). The final scene, when the two lead characters see each other in one last, silent meeting, him on a bus, her in a Porsche Cayenne, is pure Swedish film history – extremely painful to watch. As always, quality comes best when you dig where you stand, as we say in Sweden, and the film's central themes are two which Johan knows with urgent first person experience: the deep frozen cold of our mutual childhood environments in the upper classes in Stockholm's Östermalm district and the horrible cruelty of aging and loneliness in today's Swedish society. Oh gosh – I get chills down my spine just thinking about it...

Don't think – just hurry hurry to the theater!
